Prelude to Battle
At 5 a.m. on Sunday, March 6, a lone bugler in the Texas cold faced the dark fortress 250 yards away. A call to arms burst forth from his bugle, and was joined by the cry of "Viva Santa Anna" from over a thousand infantry. Massive columns charged the forbidding walls as their feet sounded like an accompanying drum roll. The blaring Degüello from the Mexican army bugler signaled to the Americans that there would be no quarter– only death. No prisoners would be taken today.
Inside the walls, 189 men stoically faced the thousands. There was no fear in this place as they had already chosen death rather than retreat. Suddenly, the defender's cannon roared to life to bathe the famous fortress in an eerie light. The battle of the Alamo had begun.
